Keeping Oakland Creative:
How Real Estate Development can support the Creative Cultural Class of Oakland
Artists play a crucial role in the cultural and economic vitality of cities, yet they often face significant challenges, such as a lack of affordable housing, workspaces, and venues. This Capstone explores the impact of these challenges, showing how 91% of Oaklanders and 70% of Americans believe that the arts enhance community quality and identity, and how many people consider the presence of arts when deciding where to live.
The "Creative Cultural Class"-professionals in arts, culture, media, and entertainment— is central to community development, but rising housing costs and gentrification make it increasingly difficult for artists to thrive. This study suggests solutions to this challenge, such as defining artists as a workforce, encouraging development in cultural districts, and implementing policies that prioritize artist housing and workspace.
These strategies can create environments that not only support artists but also boost economic growth and social inclusion. By focusing on cultural districts and affordable spaces for artists, developers and cities can foster vibrant, inclusive, and economically thriving communities.
